1923 - 1927
Where it all started
Happy Japan was founded in Yamagata City, Japan, as a wood-pattern manufacturing factory supporting industrial casting production. In 1927, the company expanded into iron casting operations, developing advanced metalworking expertise that would later play a key role in the production of durable sewing machine components and cast-metal machine bodies.
1945
Entry Into Sewing Machines
Following the war, Japan experienced a significant increase in demand for household sewing machines, and Happy Japan became closely associated with the rapid growth of the country’s post-war sewing machine industry. This period marked the beginning of Happy Japan’s identity as a dedicated sewing machine manufacturer.
1950s - 1970s
Product Development & Global Export Growth
Happy Japan expanded its production of mechanical household sewing machines, including straight-stitch models, zigzag machines, and robust metal-bodied domestic machines. These machines became well regarded for their durable cast-metal construction, reliability, and exceptionally smooth mechanical operation. As part of Japan’s significant post-war sewing machine export boom, Happy Japan machines were distributed internationally under department store labels, distributor brands, and private-label names across the United States and Europe. Many models manufactured during the 1960s remain fully operational today, reflecting the company’s longstanding reputation for quality and engineering excellence.
1970s - 2000s
Industrial Embroidery Machine Focus & Global Recognition
From the 1970s onwards, Happy Japan increasingly specialised in commercial embroidery systems, industrial sewing technology, and automated textile machinery. The company became particularly renowned for its multi-needle embroidery machines, computerised embroidery systems, and professional apparel decoration equipment. From the 1990s, Happy Japan established itself as a highly respected international brand, with its machines gaining global recognition for their reliability, precision, and consistently high-quality finishes.
2021
The return of Happy Japan Domestic Machines
After many years focused on industrial machinery, Happy Japan reintroduced domestic sewing machines under the Happy Japan name. These machines brought the renowned build quality, precision, and stitch performance associated with Happy Japan’s globally respected industrial products into the home sewing market.
2026
UK launch & looking forward
In 2026, Happy Japan UK was established as Sew Centre LTD introduced Happy Japan domestic sewing machines to the UK market. Combining the precision and durability associated with industrial-grade machinery with an accessible and highly competitive price point, these machines opened the door for customers to explore both sewing and machine embroidery with confidence.
